But
to my mind, the truly galling thing about the psychic question is not the 99.9
percent who are clueless or useless. It's the 0.1 percent who may have real talents
I lack.
I hate that. I find the whole thing disturbing not only because
of envy but because it represents a challenge to the ordered and rational, explicable
universe I prefer to live in. But, unfortunately, I have encountered at least
two people who have demonstrated inexplicable psychic abilities. One is a close
relative whose talents I respect so much that I now refuse to ask her for predictions
because I'm afraid that, if I ask her to focus on the future, she'll inevitably
see the bad end I'm heading for.
The other is a New York City psychic named
Judi Hoffman, who has made some uncannily accurate predictions about people I'm
close to. I find this very upsetting. I prefer living life like a blind mole feeling
its way with its nose through the dark tunnel of time. I can live with that. I
can be reconciled to that as long as I'm sure there's no alternative, no temptation
available, no possible window open to me or anyone else.
Consider this
story of a couple, one of whom was consulting Judi Hoffman, the other, not. There
had been a trip to Europe planned, then a major fight. They weren't speaking;
they weren't buying tickets. He was bitter and miserable. She was angry but content
to sit back and let him stew in his misery because Judi Hoffman had assured her
the split would end, the trip would be, on. Which is exactly what happened. This
is extremely unfair (especially when, on the flight to Paris, she boasted how
she'd been able to "sit back and do my nails while you suffered").
I
disapprove of this. I believe one should have the strength of character to resist
this kind of unfair advantage. But I know I don't, which is why I'm philosophically
opposed to reliance on psychics, even if, especially if, they're truly gifted.
Unless I get the jump myself.
